so…i have to get better at this whole blogging thing. i have become obsessive with taking pictures of every food that i make now…and will make an effort to get them up here more often.
there are so many things to try to do more often. this morning i went on a 2.5 mile hike in the cold and my fingers have just finally thawed out nearly 10 hours later. it was amazing though! THAT is somthing to do more often…make time to be outside and playing.
then i made soup with squash, avocado, kale, curry…cinnamon, ginger, and garlic. blended it all till creamy and mmmmmmm. oh so good! and then had a fabulous first meeting with amazingly inspiring, fabulous, and yummy folks in brooklyn for a drag group we are forming! i have been looking forward to this for literally months…since moving back to NJ…not having queer space here…its been difficult to feel at home. performing drag is somthing i’ve done and love…and i got to meet a whole lot of new folks today…which means new friendships…which is always exciting!!! horray for drag and fab folk!
also have been organizing an event to raise money to support Partners in Health (http://www.standwithhaiti.org/haiti) who is working in Haiti right now with a good friend of mine from high school. We are organizing musicians, performers, dancers etc…as well as local artists and businesses to donate pieces to a silent auction. if you live in the nj/nyc area and would like to attend feb 20th i’ll post the details in a safe way!
OK so here’s the bread. i did it! i made french bread! as much as i dont want to want bread or pasta or things like that since realizing i have celiac…its in my italian blood to crave fresh, crusty on the outside warm on the inside, good-for-sauce-sopping bread. so it happened. and here are pictures and the recipe for it so ya’ll can have it too! yay!
Gluten Free French Bread
-2 cup white rice flour
-1 cup tapioca flour
-3 teaspoons xanthan gum
-1 1/2 teaspoon sale
-2 tablespoon sugar (for yeast)
-1 1/2 cup lukewarm water (for yeast)
-2 tablespoon fast rise yeast (i used 1 package of SAF which is a gf yeast!)
-2 tablespoon margarine(i use earth balance soy free), melted (or butter…)+more for brushing
-3 eggs whites slightly beaten (anyone know a substitute for egg whites? tahini?)
-1 teaspoon vinegar
———-
-preheat oven to 400*F. lightly grease a cookie sheet and dust with corn meal.
-mix flours, xanthan gum, salt.
-dissolve sugar and yeast in water in separate bowl. wait till the mixture foams (about 5 min?) and add to dry mix.
-add margarine, egg whites, and vinny. beat for 3 minutes.
-to form: spoon dough on greased/dusted cookie sheets into 2 long french loaf shapes. *this part is a little sticky, literally, to your fingers. they wont look all smooth like the bread at the supermarket. dont worry!
-slash diagonally every few inches with knife…brush with melted margarine or butter.
-COVER DOUGH AND LET RISE 20-25 minutes.
-bake for 40-45 minutes.
enjoy how you like! i used mixed berry and rosemary jam that my brother and katie sent us for christmas. UGH. YUM. we ate a whole loaf in one sitting. and i had it toasted and sliced this morning with tofutti creamcheese and jam for breakfast!
amazing.
i hope ya’ll enjoy as much as we did! look out for experiments…i’m talking infusing herbs and flowers into the bread, tea-infused bread, and different flours other then white rice flour. mmmm!
be well—–alea
